Clear Lake, California is the oldest freshwater lake in North America. It is home to the Elem tribe of Pomo Indians, and has been home to Native Americans for over 11,000 years. It is a popular destination for swimming, hiking, and boating and home to countless species of fish, wildlife and water fowl. On the surface, it is beautiful and pristine, but underneath toxicity is building to levels that are no longer safe. Warnings have been issued about eating fish from the lake due to high levels of mercury found in the flesh. On any given day, you can detect a rotting odor rising from the lake. The mercury levels are rising to levels so dangerous that the Lake has been declared an EPA Superfund site, and yet there is little public awareness and no public outcry about the growing disaster.

The reason for this lack of awareness can only be explained through speculation; concerns about reduction of property values, the financial implications for the many resort owners, lack of compassion for reservation people, and lack of priority for funding are likely candidates to this explanation.  But, one thing is certain. The problem is increasing with time and is proving to be one of California’s greatest ecological disasters.  What we know about human nature is people don’t respond until there is some sort of detectable disaster. We seem to continue to believe it is natural for our loved ones to die or are being afflicted by a disease.  Like 9/11 or Hurricane Katrina or the Erin Brockovich story; people were slow to defend themselves, until someone proved the obvious, but then, the solution was money awards given to the families of the dead and dying. Money could not restore their family’s lives.

As a society, we need to band together to stop the pollution of Clear Lake from becoming another American disaster. We are being given another chance to step forward together to say ‘no, not again’ and prevent the catastrophe, death and destruction that are sure to happen if the mercury levels continue to rise. Learn more on our website, and then please Take Action today to help the healing of Clear Lake to begin before it’s too late.

Even more important than the lake itself is its impact on the surrounding environment, and in fact on most of California’s waterways. Studies indicate that there are record amounts of methylmercury found in the creeks and aquifers fed by Clear Lake. These toxic poisons are swept into the San Francisco Bay with little recognition to the public. Studies also show that neurological problems in our children are on the rise and have direct correlation to this problem in our water. Evidence shows the same nutrients can also multiply poisons many times more out of its more potent organic substance. This methylmercury is affecting our current generation and will affect future generations of Californians if something isn’t done to stop the poison’s development.

This website is dedicated to raising awareness about this ever-growing problem. One of our goals is to produce a documentary to showcase this problem and the possible solutions. We need to raise $250,000 to finance the project through investments, grants and fundraising. You can help today.
